Auto Union Type D 12-cylinder Streamliner racing car Type D, 1938

For the 1938 season, in which a new international Grand Prix ruling restricted engine capacity to 3 litres, the Auto Union engineers led by Robert Eberan-Eberhorst developed the 12-cylinder Auto Union Type D racing car. For the French Grand Prix at Reims in July 1938, the racing department in Zwickau built two Streamliner racing cars on the basis of the 12-cylinder Type D, but both of these were withdrawn following accidents in training.
