The last Audi to appear before the war had the typical modular features of Auto Union in the late 1930s. The body and the chassis in its constructional elements were in line with the Wanderer W 23. This meant moving away from Audi's customary front-wheel drive. The 6-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft had originally been developed for a small Horch. As a sporty middle-class car, the Audi 920 quickly developed into a commercially successful model.
