The Audi Type R "Imperator" was the first 8-cylinder car made by Audi and achieved the then symbolically important mark of 100 hp. Its production costs were just half of those of its predecessor, the Type M, even though the car was larger and more comfortable. The vehicle was fitted with a 3-speed gearbox – above all a verification of the incredible elasticity of the engine. It very good torque was achieved at a speed of just 1,100 rpm. That meant that the car could smoothly accelerate from 8 km/h to maximum in the direct gear.
