Civilian vehicles sales in the German Reich declined rapidly with the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914. The Wanderer factory then focussed its attention on the Imperial Army as a customer. After initial doubts about the suitability of a compact car in a state of warfare, the military were finally convinced of the reliability of the Wanderer compact car. From 1915 onwards, the Wanderer 2-seater was supplied in significant numbers to the motorised division of the army.
