The 54 hp 2.5 tonne truck was developed from the NSU 13/40 hp 4-cylinder car. It was initially produced solely for military purposes. Later, it was also sold to private customers who had previously relied on horse-drawn transport. NSU courted them with low running costs. For example, NSU calculated the running costs to be 28 pfennig per kilometre for the truck and 65 pfennig for the horse-drawn cart. The vehicle remained a sought-after means of transport long after the war.
