In 1930, a large DKW was launched with an extraordinary engine: an 800 cc 4-cylinder 2-stroke engine in V arrangement with a charging pump for each cylinder bank. The name 4=8 was an allusion to a 4-cylinder 2-stroke engine having twice the number of working cycles than an 8-cylinder 4-stroke engine. The vehicle had a wooden unitary body construction clad with artificial leather. In the spring of 1931, the successor model was launched with an engine enlarged to 1000 cc.
