The Wanderer factory, founded in 1885 as the "Chemnitzer Velociped-Depot", developed into the most successful bicycle manufacturer in Germany up to the turn of the century. The first Wanderer motorcycle was launched in 1902. The Chemnitz company thus completed the step to becoming a motor vehicle manufacturer. The first Wanderer "motor-bicycle" still had many similarities to a normal bicycle. To start the engine, the rider had to turn the pedals hard until the engine fired.
